Use of the fact that some present-day legal documents allow to manufacture dangerous for people products can be to shown on an example of products made by the company for which the authors of the journal article work. On the Internet site (http://www.sorbents.ru/products/product.php?id=916,) by October 20th, 2006 the manufacturer of the self-rescuer declared that the equipment corresponds to requirements of standards of fire safety NPB-302-2001 and it protects, for instance, from carbon monoxide at concentration of 6200 mg/m3 that, in their opinion, makes 310 MPC. Having addressed to Hygienic standards GN 2.2.5.1313-03 "Maximum permissible concentrations of harmful substances in the air of a working zone" that are in force in Russia we found out that while estimating repetition factor of MPC somehow MPC's of a working zone (20 mg/m3 for the full working day) were used but not one-time maximums as it is supposed to be for emergency means that makes 200 mg/m3 for 15 minutes impact or 100 mg/m3 for 30 minutes impact. Therefore, to find true repetition factor of excess of MPC for carbon monoxide that reflects protection value of the equipment out we have to divide 6200 not by 20 as manufacturers did but by 200 that makes not 310 but 31 MPC's (we beg your pardon for the detailed description of arithmetic operations). If we make same calculation for anhydrous hydrogen fluoride it turns out that the self-rescuer will protect not from 8900 MPC's (according to the manufacturer) of this substance but from 1780 as MPCм.р. makes 0,5 mg/m3 for this substance. No comments. But it's just the beginning. They tell on the site that this is protective properties of the PRODUCT that is false too since in conformity with NPB-302-2001 these data are received testing FAS, not self-rescuer! The matter is that the front part of such product according to NPB-302 should have 2 % air inflow ratio for ordinary people and 5 % for people with a beard and moustaches. This much percent of all inhaled air will make air with dangerous substances of initial concentration! For example, total concentration carbon monoxide in inhaled air will be sum of 98 % of air passed through FAS with permissible (according to NPB) overshoot concentration of 200 mg/m3 and 2 % of air passed through оbturation strip with concentration of 6200 mg/m3 that totally will make 320 mg/m3. In that way a person for 30 minutes will breathe an air with the carbon monoxide concentration exceeding maximum permissible concentration for this period by more than three times. It's extremely bad for people with a beard and moustaches: 5 % of air inflow through obturation strip will lead to the fact that person's lungs will receive air with concentration of carbon monoxide about 500 mg/m3 that will make fivefold excess of MPC for 30 minutes! If as to count on other substances excess of maximum concentration limit in inhaled air on some of them will make more than in 300 times. Having applied the law of toxicity, it is easy to calculate percent of destruction of people under such circumstances. |
